The Pirates of the Pancreas
Deep inside your belly sails a busy little island called the Pancreas Port, home to the legendary Pirates of the Pancreas.
Captain Perry Pancreas stands proudly at the wheel and shouts,
“Ahoy, crew! Sugar levels are rising—prepare the insulin!”
Whenever you eat sweet treats, crunchy snacks, or giant pirate-sized meals, sugar floods into the bloodstream like waves crashing into the sea.
That’s when the Beta Buccaneers spring into action.
First Mate Benny Beta raises the insulin flag high and calls,
“Unlock the cells and store the sugar!”
The insulin crew helps move sugar out of the blood and into the body’s cells, where it can be used for energy to run, jump, think, and play.
Soon the muscles are rowing, the brain is steering, and the whole body ship sails smoothly once again.
But sometimes the seas grow quiet and blood sugar drops too LOW.
The crew starts feeling slow and sleepy.
That’s when the Alpha Pirates leap onto the deck.
Captain Alpha Amy points toward the liver treasure vault and yells,
“Release the emergency sugar supply!”
The alpha crew sends out glucagon, a special signal that tells the liver to release stored sugar back into the bloodstream.
Within moments, energy rushes through the body like wind filling the sails of a pirate ship.
Captain Perry smiles as the crews work together across the sugar seas.
“Too high? We lower it! Too low? We raise it! That’s the pirate way!”
And that’s how the Pirates of the Pancreas keep your body balanced every single day—helping your cells stay fueled, energized, and ready for adventure.
